Left-hand C#m: shapes and fingers
Finger 5 (little finger) always takes the bottom note. Keep the hand low, near middle C but below it: lower than that the chord gets muddy. Black keys: C# G# (finger 5, 1). White keys: E (finger 3). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.
| Position | Notes, bottom up | Fingers |
|---|---|---|
| Root position | C# E G# | 5 3 1 |
| 1st inversion | E G# C# | 5 3 1 |
| 2nd inversion | G# C# E | 5 2 1 |
Five left-hand patterns on C#m
Start with the first, add one pattern per day. Count four beats for each.
| Pattern | Notes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Block chord | C#+E+G# | slow songs, ballads, the first week |
| Broken chord (low, high, middle, high) | C# G# E G# | classical style, gentle songs |
| Arpeggio up and down | C# E G# E | waltzes and slow ballads |
| Walk up the chord | C# E G# C# | linking chords, a bass that sings |
| Root and fifth | C#+G# | rock and pop, a full bass with two fingers |
A progression for the left hand: C#m → F#m → G# → C#m
The table gives the closest position for each chord, so the left hand moves as little as possible.
| Chord | Left hand plays | Keys that stay |
|---|---|---|
| C#m | C# E G# (Root position) | starting chord |
| F#m | C# F# A (2nd inversion) | C# |
| G# | B# D# G# (1st inversion) | new position |
| C#m | C# E G# (Root position) | G# |
Add the right hand
Over C#m, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes C# E G#; scale notes between them work as passing notes.
Try the right hand in another position of C#m while the left holds root position.
Make the left hand automatic on C#m
- Find C# below middle C with finger 5 and drop the hand on C#, E and G#.
- Play the first three patterns of the table, four bars each: block chord; broken chord; arpeggio up and down.
- Loop C#m → F#m → G# → C#m with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
- Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.
Short daily practice wins: the left hand learns by repetition, not by long sessions.
Play C#m in ChordRunner
ChordRunner shows a chord symbol and checks the notes you play, in any octave and any position, so a left-hand C#m counts. Plug in a MIDI keyboard or use the microphone with an acoustic piano.

How do you play C#m on piano with the left hand?
Put finger 5 on C# below middle C and play C#, E and G# with fingers 5 3 1.
Which C#m position is best for the left hand?
The one closest to the next chord. In C#m → F#m → G# → C#m the hand plays C#m = C# E G#; F#m = C# F# A; G# = B# D# G#; C#m = C# E G#.
Why are left-hand fingers different from the right hand for C#m?
Because the hand is mirrored: the little finger (5) sits on the bottom note C# and the thumb on top. The right hand would play the same notes with 1 3 5.
Can I practise left-hand chords with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. It accepts C#m in any octave, so you can train the left hand alone.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
