C#sus2 Chord on Piano (C Sharp Suspended 2nd)

The chord hiding inside C#sus2

C#sus2 and G#sus4 are the same three notes. Stack them from C# and you read C#sus2; start from G# and the same keys read G#sus4. The bass note decides the name.

Building C#sus2 from C#

Start from C#, which you may already know, and change one thing: lower the third E# one whole step to D#.

Practise C#sus2 in four steps

  1. Say the notes out loud while you press them: C#, D# and G#.
  2. Switch between C# and C#sus2 ten times without looking at your hand.
  3. Alternate root position and 1st inversion, keeping shared notes still.
  4. Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.

Keep each session short and frequent and C#sus2 will become automatic.

When to play C#sus2

  • C#sus2 works in the keys where C# already lives: C# major, Ab major (as Db) and F# major.
  • It often comes back to C# or slides to C#m, because without a third it can lean either way.
