From block chord to moving bass on D7
Start with the first, add one pattern per day. Count four beats for each.
| Pattern | Notes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Block chord | D+F#+A+C | slow songs, ballads, the first week |
| Walk up the chord | D F# A C | a moving bass line between two chords |
| Root and fifth | D+A | driving rhythms, a strong open sound |
| Octave bass | D+D | a heavy bass under a loud melody |
| Shell: root and seventh | D+C | jazz, leaves room for the right hand |
Where the left hand plays D7
Finger 5 (little finger) always takes the bottom note. Keep the hand low, near middle C but below it: lower than that the chord gets muddy. Black keys: F# (finger 3). White keys: D A C (finger 5, 2, 1). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.
| Position | Notes, bottom up | Fingers |
|---|---|---|
| Root position | D F# A C | 5 3 2 1 |
| 1st inversion | F# A C D | 5 3 2 1 |
| 2nd inversion | A C D F# | 5 3 2 1 |
| 3rd inversion | C D F# A | 5 4 2 1 |
Both hands on D7
Over D7, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes D F# A C; scale notes between them work as passing notes.
Try the right hand in another position of D7 while the left holds root position.
A progression for the left hand: D7 → G → C → D7
The table gives the closest position for each chord, so the left hand moves as little as possible.
| Chord | Left hand plays | Keys that stay |
|---|---|---|
| D7 | D F# A C (Root position) | starting chord |
| G | D G B (2nd inversion) | D |
| C | E G C (1st inversion) | G |
| D7 | D F# A C (Root position) | C |
Make the left hand automatic on D7
- Place finger 5 on D, then let the other fingers fall on F#, A and C.
- Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; walk up the chord; root and fifth; octave bass; shell: root and seventh.
- Loop D7 → G → C → D7 with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
- Then keep the left hand steady while the right hand plays any chord note: that is the goal.
Ten minutes a day for one week is usually enough for one left-hand chord to feel natural.
Train D7 against the clock
In ChordRunner the chord symbols keep coming and every correct chord moves your runner forward. A MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and a real piano works through the microphone.

What fingers do I use for D7 in the left hand?
Root position 5 3 2 1, from the bottom note up. 1st inversion 5 3 2 1, 2nd inversion 5 3 2 1.
Which D7 position is best for the left hand?
The one closest to the next chord. In D7 → G → C → D7 the hand plays D7 = D F# A C; G = D G B; C = E G C; D7 = D F# A C.
Is the left hand the same as the right hand for D7?
Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays D7 with 1 2 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 2 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.
Does a game count D7 if I play it low with the left hand?
In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes D, F#, A and C, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
