How Dsus2 is built
Formula 1 2 5. Count from D and every number is a step of the D major scale, and a b lowers it by one key.
Start chord: D
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from D |
|---|---|---|---|
| D | 1 | root | 0 |
| E | 2 | major 2nd | 2 |
| A | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |
Ways to place Dsus2 on the keys

1st inversion: E A D
2nd inversion: A D E
Fingering
| Right hand | D E A | 1 2 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Left hand | D E A | 5 4 1 |
The chord hiding inside Dsus2
Dsus2 and Asus4 are the same three notes. Stack them from D and you read Dsus2; start from A and the same keys read Asus4. The bass note decides the name.
Where Dsus2 is used
- Dsus2 works in the keys where D already lives: D major, A major and G major.
- It often comes back to D or slides to Dm, because without a third it can lean either way.
Make Dsus2 automatic
- Say the notes out loud while you press them: D, E and A.
- Play D, then Dsus2, then D again, and hear what the missing third does to the colour.
- Alternate root position and 1st inversion, keeping shared notes still.
- Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.
Five minutes a day is enough to make Dsus2 feel easy.
Play Dsus2 in a game
Chord symbols arrive one after another and the game checks every note you play, with MIDI or the microphone. Suspended chords have their own level, "Suspended (sus2/sus4)".
