Ebmaj7 for the left hand, position by position
Finger 5 (little finger) always takes the bottom note. Keep the hand low, near middle C but below it: lower than that the chord gets muddy. Black keys: Eb Bb (finger 5, 2). White keys: G D (finger 3, 1). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.
| Position | Notes, bottom up | Fingers |
|---|---|---|
| Root position | Eb G Bb D | 5 3 2 1 |
| 1st inversion | G Bb D Eb | 5 3 2 1 |
| 2nd inversion | Bb D Eb G | 5 3 2 1 |
| 3rd inversion | D Eb G Bb | 5 4 2 1 |
A progression for the left hand: Ebmaj7 → Cm7 → Fm7 → Bb7
Each chord takes the position closest to the one before. Notes that two chords share stay under the same finger.
| Chord | Left hand plays | Keys that stay |
|---|---|---|
| Ebmaj7 | Eb G Bb D (Root position) | starting chord |
| Cm7 | Eb G Bb C (1st inversion) | Eb G Bb |
| Fm7 | Eb F Ab C (3rd inversion) | Eb C |
| Bb7 | D F Ab Bb (1st inversion) | F Ab |
Practise left-hand Ebmaj7
- Place finger 5 on Eb, then let the other fingers fall on G, Bb and D.
- Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; root and fifth; octave bass; root, third and seventh; walk up the chord.
- Play Ebmaj7 → Cm7 → Fm7 → Bb7 slowly until the change happens without looking down.
- Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.
Come back tomorrow and start from the pattern you found hardest today.
From block chord to moving bass on Ebmaj7
Same chord, five rhythms. The pattern changes the style more than the notes.
| Pattern | Notes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Block chord | Eb+G+Bb+D | slow songs, ballads, the first week |
| Root and fifth | Eb+Bb | driving rhythms, a strong open sound |
| Octave bass | Eb+Eb | loud endings, big chorus |
| Root, third and seventh | Eb+G+D | smooth chord changes in jazz standards |
| Walk up the chord | Eb G Bb D | a moving bass line between two chords |
What the right hand plays over Ebmaj7
Over Ebmaj7, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes Eb G Bb D; scale notes between them work as passing notes.
If both hands play the same notes in the same octave the sound gets thick: leave a gap.

How do you play Ebmaj7 on piano with the left hand?
Put finger 5 on Eb below middle C and play Eb, G, Bb and D with fingers 5 3 2 1.
Which Ebmaj7 position is best for the left hand?
The one closest to the next chord. In Ebmaj7 → Cm7 → Fm7 → Bb7 the hand plays Ebmaj7 = Eb G Bb D; Cm7 = Eb G Bb C; Fm7 = Eb F Ab C; Bb7 = D F Ab Bb.
Why are left-hand fingers different from the right hand for Ebmaj7?
Because the hand is mirrored: the little finger (5) sits on the bottom note Eb and the thumb on top. The right hand would play the same notes with 1 2 3 5.
Does a game count Ebmaj7 if I play it low with the left hand?
In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes Eb, G, Bb and D, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.
