Five left-hand patterns on Eb7
Start with the first, add one pattern per day. Count four beats for each.
| Pattern | Notes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Block chord | Eb+G+Bb+Db | slow songs, ballads, the first week |
| Octave bass | Eb+Eb | a heavy bass under a loud melody |
| Shell: root and seventh | Eb+Db | jazz, leaves room for the right hand |
| Root, third and seventh | Eb+G+Db | smooth chord changes in jazz standards |
| Walk up the chord | Eb G Bb Db | a moving bass line between two chords |
Left-hand Eb7: shapes and fingers
Pick the position by what comes next: the one that shares the most keys with the next chord is the right one. Black keys: Eb Bb Db (finger 5, 2, 1). White keys: G (finger 3). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.
| Position | Notes, bottom up | Fingers |
|---|---|---|
| Root position | Eb G Bb Db | 5 3 2 1 |
| 1st inversion | G Bb Db Eb | 5 3 2 1 |
| 2nd inversion | Bb Db Eb G | 5 3 2 1 |
| 3rd inversion | Db Eb G Bb | 5 4 2 1 |
Both hands on Eb7
Put Eb G Bb Db in the right hand, an octave higher, and you hear the full Eb7 with a clear bass.
Try the right hand in another position of Eb7 while the left holds root position.
Eb7 → Ab → Db → Eb7 with a quiet left hand
Do not play every chord in root position: the hand would jump. These positions move one or two keys at a time.
| Chord | Left hand plays | Keys that stay |
|---|---|---|
| Eb7 | Eb G Bb Db (Root position) | starting chord |
| Ab | Eb Ab C (2nd inversion) | Eb |
| Db | F Ab Db (1st inversion) | Ab |
| Eb7 | Eb G Bb Db (Root position) | Db |
A left-hand routine for Eb7
- Place finger 5 on Eb, then let the other fingers fall on G, Bb and Db.
- Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; octave bass; shell: root and seventh; root, third and seventh; walk up the chord.
- Play Eb7 → Ab → Db → Eb7 slowly until the change happens without looking down.
- Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.
Ten minutes a day for one week is usually enough for one left-hand chord to feel natural.
Test your left hand in a game
ChordRunner shows a chord symbol and checks the notes you play, in any octave and any position, so a left-hand Eb7 counts. Plug in a MIDI keyboard or use the microphone with an acoustic piano.

How do you play Eb7 on piano with the left hand?
Put finger 5 on Eb below middle C and play Eb, G, Bb and Db with fingers 5 3 2 1.
Which Eb7 position is best for the left hand?
The one closest to the next chord. In Eb7 → Ab → Db → Eb7 the hand plays Eb7 = Eb G Bb Db; Ab = Eb Ab C; Db = F Ab Db; Eb7 = Eb G Bb Db.
Why are left-hand fingers different from the right hand for Eb7?
Because the hand is mirrored: the little finger (5) sits on the bottom note Eb and the thumb on top. The right hand would play the same notes with 1 2 3 5.
Does a game count Eb7 if I play it low with the left hand?
In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes Eb, G, Bb and Db, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
