Five left-hand patterns on E7
Start with the first, add one pattern per day. Count four beats for each.
| Pattern | Notes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Block chord | E+G#+B+D | learning a new song, hymns |
| Octave bass | E+E | a heavy bass under a loud melody |
| Root, third and seventh | E+G#+D | smooth chord changes in jazz standards |
| Walk up the chord | E G# B D | a moving bass line between two chords |
| Root and fifth | E+B | rock and pop, a full bass with two fingers |
Where the left hand plays E7
Pick the position by what comes next: the one that shares the most keys with the next chord is the right one. Black keys: G# (finger 3). White keys: E B D (finger 5, 2, 1). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.
| Position | Notes, bottom up | Fingers |
|---|---|---|
| Root position | E G# B D | 5 3 2 1 |
| 1st inversion | G# B D E | 5 3 2 1 |
| 2nd inversion | B D E G# | 5 3 2 1 |
| 3rd inversion | D E G# B | 5 4 2 1 |
What the right hand plays over E7
Over E7, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes E G# B D; scale notes between them work as passing notes.
If both hands play the same notes in the same octave the sound gets thick: leave a gap.
A progression for the left hand: E7 → A → D → E7
Do not play every chord in root position: the hand would jump. These positions move one or two keys at a time.
| Chord | Left hand plays | Keys that stay |
|---|---|---|
| E7 | E G# B D (Root position) | starting chord |
| A | E A C# (2nd inversion) | E |
| D | F# A D (1st inversion) | A |
| E7 | E G# B D (Root position) | D |
A left-hand routine for E7
- Place finger 5 on E, then let the other fingers fall on G#, B and D.
- Play the first three patterns of the table, four bars each: block chord; octave bass; root, third and seventh.
- Loop E7 → A → D → E7 with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
- Then keep the left hand steady while the right hand plays any chord note: that is the goal.
Short daily practice wins: the left hand learns by repetition, not by long sessions.

What fingers do I use for E7 in the left hand?
Root position 5 3 2 1, from the bottom note up. 1st inversion 5 3 2 1, 2nd inversion 5 3 2 1.
Which E7 position is best for the left hand?
The one closest to the next chord. In E7 → A → D → E7 the hand plays E7 = E G# B D; A = E A C#; D = F# A D; E7 = E G# B D.
Is the left hand the same as the right hand for E7?
Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays E7 with 1 2 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 2 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.
Does a game count E7 if I play it low with the left hand?
In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes E, G#, B and D, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
