F6 Chord on Piano (F Major 6th)
The F major 6th chord (F6) uses the piano keys F, A, C and D: the major triad F plus the 6th, D, one whole step above the fifth. Its sound: bright and relaxed, softer than a seventh.

A second name for the same keys
F6 has exactly the same notes as Dm7. Put F in the bass and it sounds like a major chord with a sweet 6th; put D in the bass and it is a minor seventh.
The formula of F6
Every chord is a recipe of scale steps. For F6 the recipe is 1 3 5 6, counted from F.
Start chord: F
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from F |
|---|---|---|---|
| F | 1 | root | 0 |
| A | 3 | major 3rd | 4 |
| C | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |
| D | 6 | major 6th | 9 |
Make F6 automatic
- Find F, then add the other notes one at a time: F, A, C and D.
- Play F, then F6, then F again, and hear what the added 6th brings to the chord.
- Try F6 in 1st inversion, the position that sits closest to your last chord.
- Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.
Keep each session short and frequent and F6 will become automatic.
When to play F6
- F6 is a home chord: it replaces F at the end of a song in F major.
- It is also the IV chord in C major, a soft colour before going home.
