G Major 7th Chord on Piano (Gmaj7)
G major 7th (Gmaj7) is spelled G - B - D - F#. It sounds like G with an extra F#, the note that gives it its bright, dreamy colour. Learn the shape and the inversions, then practise Gmaj7 by playing.

Gmaj7 inversions on the keyboard
In the 3rd inversion F# is the lowest note: the seventh in the bass.
Root position: G B D F#
1st inversion: B D F# G
2nd inversion: D F# G B
3rd inversion: F# G B D
Gmaj7 fingering, both hands
| Hand | G | B | D | F# |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Land all four fingers at once. If F# is quieter, the little finger is too flat.
Gmaj7 without the fifth
Drop the fifth and keep G B F#: root, third and seventh. Pianists use this shell voicing in the left hand, because those three notes already say "Gmaj7".
Gmaj7 compared with the other 7th chords on G
Play the four in a row and listen to each colour.
A 5-minute Gmaj7 routine
- Start in root position: G, B, D, F#, four times, eyes on the symbol.
- Walk up through the inversions (B D F# G, D F# G B, F# G B D) without lifting the whole hand.
- Loop Am7 → D7 → Gmaj7 until the change into and out of Gmaj7 is clean.
- Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.
A few minutes every day on Gmaj7 beat one long session a week.
Train Gmaj7 in a game
ChordRunner sends Gmaj7 at you between other chords and checks every note you play. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
Play the demoCommon questions
What is the difference between Gmaj7 and G?
Gmaj7 adds one note to the G triad: F#, the major seventh. That fourth note is what makes it a seventh chord.
Can I play Gmaj7 with three notes?
Yes. Leave out the fifth and play G B F#: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like Gmaj7 and is easier for the left hand.
Where does Gmaj7 go?
Gmaj7 is the Imaj7 of G major and the IVmaj7 of D major. It is where a ii-V-I in G major lands: Am7 → D7 → Gmaj7.
Can I practise Gmaj7 with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Gmaj7 counts in any inversion, as long as G, B, D, F# sound together.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
