A second name for the same keys
G6 has exactly the same notes as Em7. Put G in the bass and it sounds like a major chord with a sweet 6th; put E in the bass and it is a minor seventh.
Building G6 from G
Formula 1 3 5 6. Count from G and every number is a step of the G major scale, and a b lowers it by one key.
Start chord: G
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from G |
|---|---|---|---|
| G | 1 | root | 0 |
| B | 3 | major 3rd | 4 |
| D | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |
| E | 6 | major 6th | 9 |
Practise G6 in four steps
- Find G, then add the other notes one at a time: G, B, D and E.
- Switch between G and G6 ten times without looking at your hand.
- Try G6 in 1st inversion, the position that sits closest to your last chord.
- Last, meet G6 mixed with chords you already know, in an order you did not plan.
Five minutes a day is enough to make G6 feel easy.
Where G6 is used
- G6 is a home chord: it replaces G at the end of a song in G major.
- It is also the IV chord in D major, a soft colour before going home.
Train G6 with ChordRunner
