Diminished Chords Chart – ChordRunner

Learn the chart by playing it

A chart helps you look chords up; playing them makes you remember them. In ChordRunner C#dim7, Ddim, Ddim7 and the rest of this chart come at you in random order, on a MIDI keyboard or a piano or guitar by microphone.

Common questions

How do I build diminished chords?

Use the rule: minor chord with the top note one key lower. Start on any key and count the keys, black and white, to find the other notes.

Which diminished chords should I learn first?

Start with Cdim, Cdim7, C#dim, then the others in the order you meet them in songs you like. All 12 follow the same pattern.

Can I practise this chart with a MIDI keyboard or a guitar?

Yes. ChordRunner shows these chords in random order and hears a USB MIDI keyboard, or a piano or guitar through the microphone.

Do I need to memorise the whole chart?

Not at once. Learn the rule and three chords, then add one or two a week. Playing them in random order fixes them far faster than rereading the chart.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
