The chord hiding inside Asus2
Asus2 and Esus4 are the same three notes. Stack them from A and you read Asus2; start from E and the same keys read Esus4. The bass note decides the name.
Building Asus2 from A
Every chord is a recipe of scale steps. For Asus2 the recipe is 1 2 5, counted from A.
Start chord: A
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from A |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 1 | root | 0 |
| B | 2 | major 2nd | 2 |
| E | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |
Ways to place Asus2 on the keys
Each picture is still Asus2. Move only the notes that must move.

1st inversion: B E A
2nd inversion: E A B
Hands and fingers
| Right hand | A B E | 1 2 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Left hand | A B E | 5 4 1 |
Practise Asus2 in four steps
- Find A, then add the other notes one at a time: A, B and E.
- Play A, then Asus2, then A again, and hear what the missing third does to the colour.
- Alternate root position and 1st inversion, keeping shared notes still.
- Last, meet Asus2 mixed with chords you already know, in an order you did not plan.
Keep each session short and frequent and Asus2 will become automatic.
Keys and moves for Asus2
- Asus2 works in the keys where A already lives: A major, E major and D major.
- It often comes back to A or slides to Am, because without a third it can lean either way.
