Five left-hand patterns on Bb7

Same chord, five rhythms. The pattern changes the style more than the notes.

Bb7 for the left hand, position by position

Play each position slowly, then name the bottom note: that note is what the listener hears as the bass. Black keys: Bb Ab (finger 5, 1). White keys: D F (finger 3, 2). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.

Bb7

Both hands on Bb7

Put Bb D F Ab in the right hand, an octave higher, and you hear the full Bb7 with a clear bass.

If both hands play the same notes in the same octave the sound gets thick: leave a gap.

Change from Bb7 without jumping

The table gives the closest position for each chord, so the left hand moves as little as possible.

Practise left-hand Bb7

  1. Place finger 5 on Bb, then let the other fingers fall on D, F and Ab.
  2. Play the first three patterns of the table, four bars each: block chord; shell: root and seventh; root, third and seventh.
  3. Play Bb7 → Eb → Ab → Bb7 slowly until the change happens without looking down.
  4. Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.

Short daily practice wins: the left hand learns by repetition, not by long sessions.

Common questions

What fingers do I use for Bb7 in the left hand?

Root position 5 3 2 1, from the bottom note up. 1st inversion 5 3 2 1, 2nd inversion 5 3 2 1.

Can the left hand play just two notes of Bb7?

Yes: root and seventh, Bb Ab. Root and seventh already say which seventh chord it is; the right hand adds the third.

Is the left hand the same as the right hand for Bb7?

Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays Bb7 with 1 2 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 2 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.

Can I practise left-hand chords with a MIDI keyboard?

Yes. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. It accepts Bb7 in any octave, so you can train the left hand alone.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
