Csus2 Chord on Piano (C Suspended 2nd)
To play the Csus2 chord on the piano, press C, D and G. It is the major triad C with its third E swapped for the 2nd, D. Expect a sound that is airy and modern, with no third to say major or minor.

Csus2 and Gsus4
Csus2 and Gsus4 are the same three notes. Stack them from C and you read Csus2; start from G and the same keys read Gsus4. The bass note decides the name.
The formula of Csus2
Start from C, which you may already know, and change one thing: lower the third E one whole step to D.
Start chord: C
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from C |
|---|---|---|---|
| C | 1 | root | 0 |
| D | 2 | major 2nd | 2 |
| G | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |
Csus2 in every position
Learn them in pairs: root position first, then the one that keeps the most notes still.
Root position: C D G
1st inversion: D G C
2nd inversion: G C D
Which fingers
| Right hand | C D G | 1 2 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Left hand | C D G | 5 4 1 |
Practise Csus2 in four steps
- Say the notes out loud while you press them: C, D and G.
- Play C, then Csus2, then C again, and hear what the missing third does to the colour.
- Alternate root position and 1st inversion, keeping shared notes still.
- Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.
Five minutes a day is enough to make Csus2 feel easy.
Where Csus2 is used
- Csus2 works in the keys where C already lives: C major, G major and F major.
- It often comes back to C or slides to Cm, because without a third it can lean either way.
Turn Csus2 into a reflex
Chord symbols arrive one after another and the game checks every note you play, with MIDI or the microphone. Suspended chords have their own level, "Suspended (sus2/sus4)".
