Ebsus4 Chord on Piano (E Flat Suspended 4th)
The E flat suspended 4th chord (Ebsus4) uses the piano keys Eb, Ab and Bb: the major triad Eb with its third G lifted to the 4th, Ab. Expect a sound that is tense and waiting, the 4th wants to fall to the third.

How Ebsus4 is built
Formula 1 4 5. Count from Eb and every number is a step of the Eb major scale, and a b lowers it by one key.

| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from Eb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eb | 1 | root | 0 |
| Ab | 4 | perfect 4th | 5 |
| Bb | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |

Ebsus4 and Absus2
The notes of Ebsus4 also spell Absus2: start from Ab and you get root, 2nd and 5th of Ab. Same keys, two names, and the lowest note picks the one you hear.
When to play Ebsus4
- The classic move is Ebsus4 → Eb: the 4th Ab falls one step to the third G and the tension melts.
- You can use it in Eb major, Bb major and Ab major, wherever Eb itself fits.
Practise Ebsus4 in four steps
- Say the notes out loud while you press them: Eb, Ab and Bb.
- Switch between Eb and Ebsus4 ten times without looking at your hand.
- Alternate root position and 1st inversion, keeping shared notes still.
- Last, meet Ebsus4 mixed with chords you already know, in an order you did not plan.
Keep each session short and frequent and Ebsus4 will become automatic.
