A second name for the same keys
The notes of Esus4 also spell Asus2: start from A and you get root, 2nd and 5th of A. Same keys, two names, and the lowest note picks the one you hear.
Building Esus4 from E
Formula 1 4 5. Count from E and every number is a step of the E major scale, and a b lowers it by one key.
Start chord: E
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from E |
|---|---|---|---|
| E | 1 | root | 0 |
| A | 4 | perfect 4th | 5 |
| B | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |
Where your hand goes for Esus4

A short Esus4 routine
- Say the notes out loud while you press them: E, A and B.
- Switch between E and Esus4 ten times without looking at your hand.
- Alternate root position and 1st inversion, keeping shared notes still.
- Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.
Come back to Esus4 tomorrow: short daily sessions beat one long one.
Where Esus4 is used
- The classic move is Esus4 → E: the 4th A falls one step to the third G# and the tension melts.
- You can use it in E major, B major and A major, wherever E itself fits.
Turn Esus4 into a reflex
Chord symbols arrive one after another and the game checks every note you play, with MIDI or the microphone. Suspended chords have their own level, "Suspended (sus2/sus4)".
