Rootless, 7th on the bottom: E G A C
Left hand alone: F E

| Left hand | F E | 5 1 |

| Right hand | A C G | 1 2 4 |
A second name for the same keys
Look at the four top notes of Fmaj9: A C E G. They form Am7. So Fmaj9 is F in the bass with Am7 on top, an easy way to find it fast.
When to play Fmaj9
- Fmaj9 is the I chord of F major and the IV chord of C major.
- It replaces Fmaj7 when a song wants a softer, wider sound.
Practise Fmaj9 in four steps
- Say the notes out loud while you press them: F, A, C, E and G.
- Switch between Fmaj7 and Fmaj9 ten times without looking at your hand.
- Alternate root position and a rootless shape with the 3rd on the bottom, keeping shared notes still.
- Last, meet Fmaj9 mixed with chords you already know, in an order you did not plan.
Keep each session short and frequent and Fmaj9 will become automatic.
