From block chord to moving bass on F7
Start with the first, add one pattern per day. Count four beats for each.
| Pattern | Notes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Block chord | F+A+C+Eb | slow songs, ballads, the first week |
| Shell: root and seventh | F+Eb | jazz, leaves room for the right hand |
| Root, third and seventh | F+A+Eb | smooth chord changes in jazz standards |
| Root and fifth | F+C | driving rhythms, a strong open sound |
| Octave bass | F+F | loud endings, big chorus |
Where the left hand plays F7
Play each position slowly, then name the bottom note: that note is what the listener hears as the bass. Black keys: Eb (finger 1). White keys: F A C (finger 5, 3, 2). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.
| Position | Notes, bottom up | Fingers |
|---|---|---|
| Root position | F A C Eb | 5 3 2 1 |
| 1st inversion | A C Eb F | 5 3 2 1 |
| 2nd inversion | C Eb F A | 5 3 2 1 |
| 3rd inversion | Eb F A C | 5 4 2 1 |
What the right hand plays over F7
Over F7, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes F A C Eb; scale notes between them work as passing notes.
If both hands play the same notes in the same octave the sound gets thick: leave a gap.
F7 → Bb → Eb → F7 with a quiet left hand
Each chord takes the position closest to the one before. Notes that two chords share stay under the same finger.
| Chord | Left hand plays | Keys that stay |
|---|---|---|
| F7 | F A C Eb (Root position) | starting chord |
| Bb | F Bb D (2nd inversion) | F |
| Eb | G Bb Eb (1st inversion) | Bb |
| F7 | F A C Eb (Root position) | Eb |
Practise left-hand F7
- Place finger 5 on F, then let the other fingers fall on A, C and Eb.
- Play the first three patterns of the table, four bars each: block chord; shell: root and seventh; root, third and seventh.
- Loop F7 → Bb → Eb → F7 with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
- Then keep the left hand steady while the right hand plays any chord note: that is the goal.
Come back tomorrow and start from the pattern you found hardest today.

How do you play F7 on piano with the left hand?
Put finger 5 on F below middle C and play F, A, C and Eb with fingers 5 3 2 1.
Which F7 position is best for the left hand?
The one closest to the next chord. In F7 → Bb → Eb → F7 the hand plays F7 = F A C Eb; Bb = F Bb D; Eb = G Bb Eb; F7 = F A C Eb.
Is the left hand the same as the right hand for F7?
Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays F7 with 1 2 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 2 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.
Does a game count F7 if I play it low with the left hand?
In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes F, A, C and Eb, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
