Where the left hand plays F7

Play each position slowly, then name the bottom note: that note is what the listener hears as the bass. Black keys: Eb (finger 1). White keys: F A C (finger 5, 3, 2). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.

What the right hand plays over F7

Over F7, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes F A C Eb; scale notes between them work as passing notes.

If both hands play the same notes in the same octave the sound gets thick: leave a gap.

F7 → Bb → Eb → F7 with a quiet left hand

Each chord takes the position closest to the one before. Notes that two chords share stay under the same finger.

Practise left-hand F7

  1. Place finger 5 on F, then let the other fingers fall on A, C and Eb.
  2. Play the first three patterns of the table, four bars each: block chord; shell: root and seventh; root, third and seventh.
  3. Loop F7 → Bb → Eb → F7 with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
  4. Then keep the left hand steady while the right hand plays any chord note: that is the goal.

Common questions

How do you play F7 on piano with the left hand?

Put finger 5 on F below middle C and play F, A, C and Eb with fingers 5 3 2 1.

Which F7 position is best for the left hand?

The one closest to the next chord. In F7 → Bb → Eb → F7 the hand plays F7 = F A C Eb; Bb = F Bb D; Eb = G Bb Eb; F7 = F A C Eb.

Is the left hand the same as the right hand for F7?

Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays F7 with 1 2 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 2 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.

Does a game count F7 if I play it low with the left hand?

In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes F, A, C and Eb, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
