Gsus2 Chord on Piano (G Suspended 2nd)
The G suspended 2nd chord (Gsus2) uses the piano keys G, A and D: the major triad G with its third B swapped for the 2nd, A. Its sound: open and unsettled, neither major nor minor.

Gsus2 in every position
Each picture is still Gsus2. Move only the notes that must move.
Root position: G A D
1st inversion: A D G
2nd inversion: D G A
Fingering
| Right hand | G A D | 1 2 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Left hand | G A D | 5 4 1 |
A second name for the same keys
Gsus2 and Dsus4 are the same three notes. Stack them from G and you read Gsus2; start from D and the same keys read Dsus4. The bass note decides the name.
The formula of Gsus2
Formula 1 2 5. Count from G and every number is a step of the G major scale, and a b lowers it by one key.
Start chord: G
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from G |
|---|---|---|---|
| G | 1 | root | 0 |
| A | 2 | major 2nd | 2 |
| D | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |
Make Gsus2 automatic
- Say the notes out loud while you press them: G, A and D.
- Play G, then Gsus2, then G again, and hear what the missing third does to the colour.
- Try Gsus2 in 1st inversion, the position that sits closest to your last chord.
- Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.
Keep each session short and frequent and Gsus2 will become automatic.
When to play Gsus2
- Gsus2 works in the keys where G already lives: G major, D major and C major.
- It often comes back to G or slides to Gm, because without a third it can lean either way.
Play Gsus2 in a game
ChordRunner shows a chord symbol and you play it on a MIDI keyboard, a real piano through the microphone or the on-screen keys. Suspended chords have their own level, "Suspended (sus2/sus4)".
